Riflescope review: MTC Optics Copperhead F2 scope

Dave Barham reviews the new Copperhead F2 scope from MTC Optics – a light yet robust riflescope ideal for airguns

MTC’s new Copperhead F2 scopes are just about as compact and light as they come. There are two models in the range available, the 4-16 x 44 model that I have on test here, plus a 3-12 x 44 version. Weighing in at just 690g/24oz ounces and measuring 274mm/10.5 inches long, it’s the perfect choice to place on top of any of the modern compact rifles out there to help keep weight to a minimum. As you can see by the photo, I attached this one sent to me, to the Brocock Concept XR, which is a great combination.

PACKED WITH FEATURES
The Copperhead features MTC Optics’ all-new AMD2 illuminated reticle, for clear and uncluttered range markings out to extreme ranges. It also sports an illuminated central crosshair that can be set to a choice of six brightness settings to adapt to changing light conditions. Each ‘stop’ has an off position in between, so it’s easy to ensure that the IR is off when you’re not using it.

The new AMD2 reticle provides numerous aiming points including improved windage reference points, which is just one reason why it is being talked about among HFT circles as we speak. It sort of looks like an arrow pointing upwards, and after a few hours on the range during some pretty testing conditions with strong gusts of wind, I got to know it quite well and was confident in taking adjusted shots at range.

Zeroing was also a doddle, thanks to the lockable, finger-adjustable elevation and windage turrets. Simply undo them, make your adjustments and lock them down. With click-stop adjustments in mils, (1 click = 1cm at 100m), this scope is perfect for both hunting and range applications.

STURDY CONSTRUCTION
The 30mm tube has been matched to a high quality, multi-coated 44mm objective lens to produce the sharpest image, and I have to tip my hat to the MTC R&D team because the image quality is superb for such a compact scope.

A pin-sharp sight picture is guaranteed thanks to the fast-focus eyepiece, which is very smooth to operate and has a huge range of adjustment for even the very worst eyesight. There’s also a side adjuster knob to dial-out parallax error from infinity down to 10 yards.

An optional extra sidewheel is available for those who like to use them. I would have liked to have had this sidewheel during testing, because the adjuster knob on this brand new scope was a bit stiff to begin with out of the box, although it did ease up after continued use.

The Copperhead also comes supplied with flip-up covers to protect the lenses when the scope is not in use, and these simply push on/pull off each end of the scope.

If you’re in the market for a very compact, lightweight and user-friendly scope, then these new Copperhead F2 models are well worth looking at.
