Pheasant feeders, brimming with grain, are an irresistible attraction for these raiders. Each year, I help the gamekeeper manage grey squirrel numbers and protect the valuable feed for the pheasants.
reminder of the importance of patience and precision.
This PCP rifle is a well-crafted piece of equipment, offering a balance of performance and versatility, combining elements from the S410 and S510 models.
One of the first things you notice is the smooth side-lever action. It’s incredibly fluid, making follow-up shots quick and easy — a real pleasure to use in the field. The rifle also has a fully regulated system that keeps power delivery consistent. During testing with the .177 version, it delivered around 120 consistent shots, which is great for accuracy and reliability, whether in the field or at the range.
Despite its durable build, the S510R Core is surprisingly lightweight, making it easy to carry, even on long sessions in the field. The new S-TEC moderator is another plus, keeping the muzzle report to a minimum so you can go about your work without disturbing anything. Plus, with three magazines included, you won’t run out of shots when you need them most.
I paired the S510R Core with QYS Domed 8.44gr pellets, and it delivered tight groupings and clean, humane kills up to 40 or 50 yards. The sporter walnut stock is not only attractive but comfortable to hold, making the shooting experience even better.
All in all, the Air Arms S510R Core is an impressive rifle. Whether it’s for pest control or small game hunting, it does the job effectively. After using it during this hunt, it’s clear why Air Arms has such a strong reputation — it’s reliable, precise, and a pleasure to use.
Reaching the hide, I set up my Primos trigger sticks for a steady shooting rest. Positioned 25 yards from the feeder, nestled beside an old silver beech tree, the hide offered the perfect vantage point.
About 30 minutes later, the first squirrel appeared. It cautiously approached the feeder, lifted the lid, and perched itself to snack on the peanuts. Slowly and carefully, I raised the S510R Core, lined up the crosshairs, and squeezed the trigger. The pellet hit its mark, and the first grey of the day was down.
The next opportunity came quickly, but it didn’t go as planned. A squirrel caught me off guard, grabbing a peanut while I was distracted. My rushed shot narrowly missed, sending the squirrel scrambling back into the trees for cover.
Moments like these test your patience. Another 30 minutes passed before the next shot came. This time, I was more careful. A squirrel descended from the treetops, paused briefly and then made its way to the feeder. I lined up the shot and delivered another clean hit.
A DEPENDABLE COMPANION
As the morning went on, the action slowed. The familiar chatter of squirrels echoed through the trees, a sound like shaking a box of Tic Tacs, but they seemed reluctant to approach the feeder. Breaking cover, I inspected the area and collected the downed squirrels.
Back in the hide, I waited patiently. Around 11.30am, the fourth and final squirrel of the day appeared. It cautiously approached the feeder, scanning its surroundings before committing. The shot was clean, and with that, my morning hunt came to an end.
With four greys in the bag and one near-miss, the Air Arms S510R Core had proven itself to be a dependable and accurate companion. The gamekeeper was pleased with the reduced squirrel activity and pointed out a few more hotspots for feeders, ensuring I’d have plenty of opportunities to continue the effort in the coming weeks.
Once home, I reflected on my morning. The S510R Core had performed flawlessly, and the trail cam data had saved me hours of waiting. I ordered more feeders, knowing they’d be put to good use.
Squirrel hunting in the colder months is as much about preparation as it is about skill. From setting up feeders to scouting with trail cams, every step plays a vital role in ensuring success. Having a reliable rifle like the Air Arms S510R Core also makes all the difference.
This rifle isn’t just a tool. Its precision, consistency, and user-friendly design make it a must-have for serious hunters. Whether you’re managing pests or enjoying a day in the woods, the S510R Core delivers every time.
For me, there’s no better way to spend a crisp winter morning than contributing to conservation and enjoying the challenge of the hunt.
